Rameshwaram is the city which is located on Pabman Island, separated from the Mainland island and this city is the closest point to reach Sri Lanka. The history of Rameshwaram Temple is centered around that Lord Rama built a bridge from here across the sea to Lanka to save his wife Sita from Ravan. That’s why the name of this city is Rameshwaram that means “ One who is Lord of Rama” (Ram YashEashwaran).

Rameshwaram Temple History

The history of Rameshwaram Temple dates back to the time when Lord Rama went to release Goddess Sita who was abducted by the Ravana. The place was under the control of the Chola King named Rajendra Chola I. The major religion of the town is Hinduism as the Hindus have contributed much to the temple.

Various inscriptions and setup were used as dynasty’s marker. The then ruler of Delhi Sultanate, AlauddinKhalji built a mosque in the honor of his Islamic victory. In the early 15th Century, Rameswaram was a part of the dynasty of Pandya. By the time of 1520 CE the town was ruled by Vijayanagara Empire. Rameswaram became India’s part in 1947, after its independence.
