History of Bhimtal

Bhimtal is an extremely ancient area and has been named after the Bhima who was written as a character in the Mahabharata. The main cause of putting this name to the city was the Bhimeshwara Mahadev temple which is actually an old Shiva temple and is located at the banks of the beautiful Bhimtal lake. It is strongly believed that the temple which has been mentioned above was built when Bhima visited the sacred site during his banishment or as they called it vanvas during the period of the Pandavas. The temple, however, in the present scenario is the one which was built by Baz Bahadur in the seventeenth century who was one of the kings of the Chand dynasty and also the Raja of Kumaon. However, during the British rule, Bhimtal came under their presidency after the war between the Nepalese and the Anglos.
