History of the Darjeeling

As a part of the history of Darjeeling, the development of town took place in the reign of East India Company. It was the early 1700s that Darjeeling remained a part of Sikkim under the rule of the King of Sikkim. Indeed, the Sikkim was continuously invaded by the Gorkhas of Nepal. As they were on a spree to conquer areas in the state of Sikkim, they stepped on the foot of East India Company. This led to a war between the two, out of which Britishers won. It was in 1817 that a treaty was signed amongst Britishers and Nepalese. Under the treaty, the Nepalese give back all the areas won and the Sikkim was given back to its King by the Britishers.
After a span of 10 years, another war broke between Nepal and Sikkim. Then, Captain Lloyd and Mr. Grant were sent by the East India Company to resolve peacefully. As Captain Lloyd stayed in the region, he was mesmerized by its picturesque beauty. He suggested a proposal for developing the town of Darjeeling with the assistance of Sikkim’s Raja. Indeed, the Raja gave Darjeeling as a gift to East India Company and they decided to give Rs. 6000 monthly allowance to the King.

In order to carve Darjeeling, Dr. Archibald Campbell was called to maintain law and order, develop roads and establish Hill Corps. Later, many slaves from Sikkim ran away and started staying in Sikkim freely. And the Sikkim started creating issues with the East India Company that led to the isolation of Sikkim’s King. Even his yearly allowance was canceled. Further to this, Raja retired and left the reign to Dewan Namguay. Later, he fled away and the son of the king was enthroned, who signed the peace treaty with the Britishers. And the final addition of land to Darjeeling was made by Britishers, who signed the treaty with Bhutanese and took Kalimpong from them.
